Senior Data & Analytics Engineer
Who We Are:
At Wagepoint, we’re good people. Sure, maybe we’re biased. But that’s only because Wagepointers bring the best versions of ourselves to do some of the best work in our careers.
We’re an authentic team who bring our diverse backgrounds, ideas, experiences and cultures together to make payroll magic. Speaking of, we “pull rabbits out of hats” for thousands of small business owners across Canada who rely on our payroll software to pay their employees and process their payroll taxes. And we’re just getting started.
We’re growing and looking for more awesome people to join our merry band of misfits. We are looking for people who share our understanding that when it comes to our commitment to our customers: we mean business. Especially given that the consequences of getting payroll wrong can sometimes be dire.
If you are the kind of person who has always wanted to make a difference and be heard at work, Wagepoint will give you plenty of opportunity to do just that.
The Role at High Level:
We’re looking for a Senior Data & Analytics Engineer who thrives in ambiguous environments and enjoys owning problems end-to-end — from understanding a business need, to designing and building data solutions that are trusted, scalable, and impactful.
You will design and build data pipelines, transform and model data for analytics, and deliver dashboards and insights that drive decision-making across the organization. This role is highly collaborative and works closely with the Director of Data and Analytics Engineering and other partners across Finance, Marketing, Sales, and the broader business.
What You'll Be Expected To Own:
You will own analytics solutions end-to-end — from ambiguous business questions, through data modeling and transformation, to trusted metrics and dashboards used in decision-making.
Specifically, you will:
Design, build, and maintain scalable, cloud-native data pipelines
Develop automated ETL / ELT workflows with strong validation and data quality checks
Model and transform data to make it business-ready and analytics-friendly
Build and maintain dashboards and reports (e.g., Power BI or Tableau) that clearly serve defined business needs
Partner directly with stakeholders to clarify requirements when the problem is not yet well-defined
Standardize and document data definitions and assumptions to ensure consistency and trust
Monitor, troubleshoot, and improve data workflows over time
Collaborate closely with engineers, analysts, and business partners to deliver accessible, trusted data
What You Bring To The Table:
Strong SQL and Python skills, with experience building production data transformations and pipelines
Experience owning data workflows or systems that others depend on
Solid understanding of data modeling and analytics-oriented architecture
Comfort working in cloud environments (Azure experience is a plus)
Experience supporting BI and analytics use cases (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, or similar tools)
Ability to communicate clearly, document decisions, and explain trade-offs
A self-starter mindset — you see gaps, ask questions, and propose solutions
We value strong fundamentals, good judgment, and a growth mindset over experience with any specific tool.
You Will Succeed In This Role If:
You enjoy owning problems end to end — from an unclear business question to a solution people actually use.
You think about how data is consumed, not just how it is produced, and you care whether what you build changes decisions or behavior.
You are comfortable evaluating existing systems, identifying tradeoffs, and suggesting improvements — even when things “work.”
You can work directly with non-technical partners, ask good questions, and help shape the problem before jumping to a solution.
You’re excited to grow your scope over time, take on more responsibility, and help shape how a small, lean data team evolves.
You communicate clearly, are easy to work with, and handle ambiguity, feedback, and production issues with calm and ownership.
This Role May Not Be a Good Fit If:
You prefer working exclusively from fully defined requirements or tickets
You want to specialize only in dashboards or only in pipelines
You expect a large data team, PM, or architect to define scope for you
You are uncomfortable working directly with non-technical stakeholders
Bonus points if:
You’ve worked on small or growing data teams and worn multiple hats
You enjoy helping the business learn how to use data effectively
You care deeply about data quality, reliability, and trust
You’ve helped evolve or improve an analytics platform over time
What We Bring To The Table:
Impact: Roll up your sleeves and directly contribute to the growth and success of Wagepoint by shaping our workforce.
Culture: The opportunity to work with the world’s friendliest team, solving interesting problems together with an endless amount of laughter (We work hard, but we always have time for a bad joke or two).
Growth: Opportunities for professional development and career advancement - we are always, always learning with a growth oriented mindset.
Innovation: Work in an environment that encourages creativity and new ideas.
Remote: The ability to work from home, forever! Wagepoint is a remote company, so you don’t have to worry about commuting to an office. Plus, more time with your pets is always a bonus!
Ready to embark on an exciting journey with us? Apply now and help us build the future of Wagepoint!
Next Steps:
If all the above feels right and proper, please don’t feel like you need to send us an uninspired cover letter. Just send us your updated resume and perhaps a few lines on what excites you about the job - we really want to get to know who you are, not just about how we can work together. If we believe you’re a good match, someone from our team will reach out to schedule a call.
